Martial Arts Styles

If you have explored Martial Arts Training, you likely have found that there are many styles of self-defense and competitive Marital Arts along with many styles of teaching.

To provide a reference point, you can break Martial Arts styles into three categories.

Self Defense styles teach you how to defend yourself against a criminal or criminals who attack you in the street, your home or place of business. For children, these styles teach how to defend again bullies or gang situations.
There two types of competitive styles. There is ring fighting which is popular today on TV as the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Then there are styles that teach Tournament or Olympic competition.
Lastly, there is Health & Fitness styles. These are gyms, clubs or schools that use Martial Arts as a fun way of getting in shape, but do not compete and do not spend the time teaching the self-defense application of the moves beyond what is apparent.
Teaching styles and methods vary greatly. Some will be relaxed; others provide more of a disciplined and traditional atmosphere, others can be like military boot camp. Instructors’ attitudes vary greatly as well, as some instructors will only seek to improve their fighting art, while others will see being a good teacher as part of their art.  Some will value tradition so greatly that they will not introduce any realities of the modern world into their programs from a self defense and physical and mental fitness standpoint, while others are embracing and adapting their lessons to the current world we live in.

Is there a BEST Choice?

No one Martial Arts Style, School Atmosphere or Instructors methods of training and personality is absolutely the best for everyone.   It is the student that finds the teacher that is best for them.

Although there may not be a Martial Art that is the BEST Choice for everyone, there is definitely a best choice for you.
